Failures in processes, controls, and errors made up <strong>27%<\/strong>, while unknown causes represented 6% and other factors accounted for <strong>1%<\/strong> of the total.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Retail loss percentages vary widely across different retail sectors. For instance,<strong> pharmacies, grocery stores, department stores, and mass merchandise retailers<\/strong> typically experience average loss rates exceeding <strong>2%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In contrast, specialty <strong>apparel stores have an average retail theft rate of 1.9%<\/strong>. Retail segments such as jewelry, watches, home furnishings, furniture, and footwear generally see average retail theft rates of 1.5% or less.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> NRF<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Retail theft in small businesses<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>85% of small business<\/strong> retailers <strong>experience theft at least once a year<\/strong>, while only 5% report never experiencing theft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>75% of retailers<\/strong> report <strong>monthly theft losses between $500 and $2,500<\/strong>. Take a look at some behavioral statistics associated with retail thieves.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>88% of retailers<\/strong> report that shoplifters are <strong>more aggressive and violent<\/strong> compared to the previous year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Retailers who specifically track violent shoplifting incidents saw a <strong>35% average increase<\/strong> in incidents involving violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>81% of retailers<\/strong> observed that <strong>Organized Retail Crime (ORC) offenders<\/strong> had become more violent in 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>67% of retailers<\/strong> see an increase in <strong>violence and aggression<\/strong> from ORC perpetrators compared to the previous year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>70% of retailers<\/strong> have observed an increase in theft by repeat offenders, and <strong>61%<\/strong> of these respondents have also seen a rise in <strong>financial losses<\/strong> due to this group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>53% of retailers<\/strong> have reported an increase in <strong>violence<\/strong> from repeat offenders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More than 33% of respondents<\/strong> have noticed increases in <strong>juvenile shoplifting<\/strong> across all aspects: frequency, financial loss, and violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>41% of retailers<\/strong> have seen a rise in <strong>juvenile violence<\/strong> during theft incidents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>53% of retailers<\/strong> report a moderate to significant increase in violence among repeat offenders during shoplifting, while <strong>41%<\/strong> note an increase in violence among juveniles.
